The Coldest Man

December 2 was nearly 0 degrees wind chill. The coldest man that I've ever seen stood waiting in line for his lunch. He was shivering uncontrollably as he tried to tell us what toppings he wanted on his meatballs. He wore 2 pair of jeans, a sweatshirt, a partially zipped up hooded sweatshirt, duck taped boots and a wind jacket. He carried his belongings in a ripped and overloaded backpack; no blanket or sleeping bag. The folks who come to the truck on cold days are the most in need. We had no jacket to offer him, only a mega cup of fresh brewed coffee. He was so grateful for that seemingly meager token. The next week we found a sleeping bag in the Trinity JESUS Delivers bin along with scarves, blankets, hats, and gloves. We gave the coldest man his outdoor "kit"; I cannot explain in words the look in his eyes as he tucked the sleeping bag under his arm and said, "You guys really care, thank you and thank God!"
