God Dressed Me Today

An elderly woman, whom we'll call Gladys, lives in a low income senior housing unit downtown St. Paul. She is a frequent guest of the truck. She wheels a piece of luggage that contains her "stuff". We met her this past Saturday as we were setting out the clothes collected from the JESUS Delivers bin. Thanks to the "Sorting Team" all we had to do was pull a labeled bag out of the back of the SUV and set the organized and folded contents on an eight foot table - garage sale style. People have grown accustomed to seeing the table on Saturdays and a crowd developed quickly, sorting through the goods for something they might need. Gladys was one of the first shoppers at the table. She rummaged through the right side (right is women's, left is men's) until she found a sweater. She grew a smile from ear to ear as she asked, "Isn't this the most beautiful sweater you've ever seen? I bet this is hand made." As she held it up to check for size, she asked, "Do you think it will fit?"

Without hesitation, I responded, "Ma'am, that sweater has your name on it! It fits perfectly." She then held her hands up and proceeded to do a pirouette. As she finished her 360 degree turn, she exclaimed, "God dressed me..." Gladys proceeded to tell me that her shoes, socks, pants, shirt, coat, hat, and gloves were all "gifts" from the JESUS Delivers store - she believed that God brought her what she needed as the weather was turning colder. It is hard to explain the feeling of cleaning out your closet on Friday and giving to someone in need to wear on Saturday.

Alyce, Faye, David, Kris, Sally, and Peter served juice, chili dogs, cheese, peppers, and pudding to about 175 people. Next time with this team, we are going to add pickles, pretzels, and pineapple...repeat that menu five times fast!
