The work is very similar to working in typical food service businesses. Food preparation is like working
at a deli section; stocking is like working as a stock person at Cub Foods; serving is like
being behind the counter at Subway or Chipotle; cleaning utilizes bleach and, well, is like cleaning!
The homeless people you serve are not all living outside; some live in temporary apartment
housing, cars, and day shelters. All races are represented that include men, women
and some children. Some are alcoholics or addicted to their drug of choice. We have seen a couple of small fights in the last
four years. In all cases so far, the line is orderly and the people are patient. They know we are Christians and that we Love
them. Many will be gracious with their appreciation. There is great opportunity to witness your faith through
action and conversation.
There are typically three roles on the truck: Greeter/Beverage,
Condiment/Snack, and 2 Plate Preparers. We can rotate as your personality and comfort level
dictates. The Greeter/Beverage sees the eyes and touches the hands of all who come to the truck. Just like Subway, we feel
that the people can have choices as to what food options they want on their plate so special orders are the norm!
